SK geo centric (SKGC; Seoul, South Korea) signed an HOA (head of agreement) for building advanced recycling (pyrolysis) plant within its recycling cluster in Ulsan with Plastic EnergyLtd., the UK-based advanced plastic recycling technology company, in Seoul, South Korea, said Chemengonline.

The signing ceremony was attended by the top management of both companies including CEO of SKGC Na Kyung-soo and CEO of Plastic Energy Carlos Monreal. This follow’s SKGC’s announcement that it would be collaborating with PureCycle Technologies to build the country’s first recycling plant for polypropylene.

According to this HOA, an advanced recycling (pyrolysis) plant in Ulsan will be built by SKGC using Plastic Energy’s technology. The two companies also agreed on promoting joint advanced recycling technique businesses in metropolitan areas in Korea and expanding the businesses to Asian regions. As the largest advanced recycling plant in Asia, the facility will be built on a total area of 13,000m2. with an annual capacity of 66,000 tons by the second half of 2025.

SKGC will also build a post-treatment plant using its own technology with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons. Using pyrolysis oil in the post-treatment process will upgrade the quality of the products. Moreover, through this process, the pyrolysis oil can be applied in the production of various petrochemical products.

Founded in 2012, Plastic Energy is operating two advanced recycling (pyrolysis) plants in Spain, one in Almeria and the other in Sevilla. The company also own several patented advanced recycling technologies in the U.S. and Europe. It is also currently under discussion with several major petrochemical companies to build 5 more global advanced recycling plants.

Using pyrolysis oil, which is obtained by heating plastic waste at high temperature, will help creating circular economy. The methodology is also called “urban oil field” technology as it extracts crude oil from waste such as vinyl.

Demand for recycled plastics is expected to surge due to strengthened regulations in developed countries, such as the mandatory recycling plastics policy. According to the petrochemical industry, the pyrolysis oil chemical recycling market is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 17% from 700,000 tons in 2020 to 3.3 million tons in 2030.

We remind, SK Energy announced that it is in full swing to cooperate with Doosan Fuel Cell to establish the on-site hybrid energy stations that utilize fuel cells (Tri-gen) which can generate hydrogen, energy, and heat simultaneously.

Borealis and VERBUND announce the installation of a new photovoltaic (PV) array in Schwechat, Austria, said the company.

The new PV park, which will supply power to Borealis operations on site, is the second to have been jointly planned and implemented by the two companies. The output provided by the new facility moves Borealis closer to its aim of sourcing 100% of the electricity used in its own operations from renewable sources by the year 2030. The new joint project realised by Borealis and VERBUND is clear evidence of the companies’ shared commitment to investing in a more environmentally friendly energy future.

The new solar PV park is located on an industrial plot at Borealis production operations in Schwechat. The construction phase began in May 2022, with completion anticipated by the end of the year; energy supply should commence soon thereafter.

Covering a surface area of around 75,000 square meters, the new array will be composed of approximately 10,220 individual PV modules, each with a nominal power (peak power) of 460 watt-peak (Wp). Combined, the total installed power of the park is projected to reach around 4.7 megawatt-peak (MWp), with an annual energy yield of around 5.6 gigawatt hours (GWh).

This is roughly comparable to the amount of energy consumed annually by 1,400 Austrian households. The entire energy output supplied by the new solar PV park will be used for Borealis production operations. The amount of renewable energy generated will reduce the annual CO2 emissions of this location by nearly 1,200 tons.

The plant will be based on Borealis’ own Borcycle™ M technology, which transforms polyolefin-based post-consumer waste into high-performance polymers suitable for demanding applications. MOSCOW (MRC) -- Industrial gases company Air Liquide and TotalEnergies plan to produce low-carbon hydrogen at the Grandpuits site in France, the pair said on Tuesday, as France looks to increase its sources of renewable energy, said the company.

Under a long-term contract committing TotalEnergies to purchase the hydrogen produced for the needs of its platform, Air Liquide will invest over EUR130 million in the construction and operation of a new unit producing hydrogen.

This unit will partly use biogas from the biorefinery built by TotalEnergies and will be delivered with Air Liquide’s carbon capture technology CryocapTM. These innovations will prevent emissions amounting to 150,000 tons of CO2 a year compared to current processes. TotalEnergies’ biorefinery will use the unit’s hydrogen to produce sustainable aviation fuel.

"By recycling the biogas produced by the biorefinery into renewable hydrogen, this innovative project makes full use of the conversion of the Grandpuits refinery into a zero crude platform harnessing the potential of biomass, especially in the production of sustainable aviation fuel,” said Bernard Pinatel, President, Refining & Chemicals, TotalEnergies. "Combined with the production of low carbon hydrogen and the capture of CO2, this project contributes to TotalEnergies’ ambition to decarbonize all of the hydrogen used by its European refineries by 2030."
