PolyOne launches innovative polymer technology to serve the healthcare industry

MOSCOW (MRC) -- PolyOne Corporation, a premier global provider of specialized polymer materials, services and solutions has announced the launch of NEU View Radiopaque Translucent Solutions, an innovative polymer formulation that provides catheter manufacturers and healthcare professionals enhanced material functionality and performance, as per the company's press release.

Catheters made using the patent-pending NEU View technology provide optical visibility (translucent) when outside the body and superior visibility under X-ray (radiopaque) when inside the body.

This technology enhances the ability of clinicians to make visual confirmation of fluid flow and can allow for detection of potentially harmful air bubbles that might cause embolisms, while patients can experience greater comfort via use of a single catheter. Manufacturers of catheters can benefit through increased production efficiency by eliminating a need for co-extrusion, which is typically required to manufacture striped catheters, as well as reducing material usage and complexity.

"PolyOne's specialization strategy is powered by our exceptional ability to innovate, and our launch of NEU View materials is the latest example," said Robert M. Patterson, executive vice president, chief operating officer, PolyOne Corporation. "Our healthcare solutions portfolio continues to grow, as does our mix in this important industry, where last year company revenues from healthcare reached USD413 million, as compared to USD103 million in 2006."

As MRC wrote before, in February 2014, PolyOne Corporation announced the addition of new capabilities to its OnColor HC Plus portfolio. These expanded offerings add medical-grade LDPE, nylon, PEBA, PS and PVC to the globally available palette of specialty healthcare colorants, and are pre-certified to meet or exceed biocompatibility requirements for ISO 10993 and/or USP Class VI protocols.

European HDPE prices dropped in March for CIS countries

Moscow (MRC) - Weak demand and price cuts of the feedstock made European producers to reduce export prices of high density polyethylene (HDPE) for March deliveries to the CIS markets. Price offers have reached the level of EUR1,100/tonne, according to ICIS-MRC Price Report.

March price of ethylene in Europe was reduced by EUR20/tonne, compared with the level in February. On the back of reduction in the feedstock costs and weak demand in the foreign markets, European producers had to decrease their HDPE export prices for the CIS markets.

This week deals for March delivery of European HDPE to the CIS markets were discussed in the range of EUR1,120-1,180/tonne FCA.

Some companies have reported tight supply of pipe polyethylene PE100.

In general, many companies have been in no hurry to agree with the price offer for European polyethylene. A participant of the negotiations said he hoped to achieve the price at the level of EUR1,090-1,100/tonne FCA, citing the high euro exchange rate and cheaper offers from Middle Eastern producers.

Japan VAM & Powal to shut its VAM plant in Japan

MOSCOW (MRC) -- Japan VAM & Powal (JVP) is likely to shut a vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) plant for maintenance turnaround, as per Apic-online.

A Polymerupdate source in Japan informed that the plant will be shut in mid-June 2014. It is likely to remain off-stream for around one month.

Located in Sakai, Osaka, Japan, the plant has a production capacity of 150,000 mt/year.

As MRC wrote previously, in October 2013, Ineos Enterprises announced the closure of its Vinyl Acetate Monomer (VAM) facility at Saltend in Hull. This announcement does not affect the Ineos Ethyl Acetate plant at the same site which will remain in production.

The VAM market has become increasingly targeted by cheap imports mainly from Saudi Arabia and the USA, both of whom benefit from low cost raw materials. The VAM plant in Hull gets one of its main raw materials, ethylene, down a pipeline from Grangemouth in Scotland.
