Chevron plans to build world's largest 1-hexene plant in Texas

(cpchem) -- Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) will build the world's largest on-purpose 1-hexene plant capable of producing up to 250,000 metric tons (551,000,000 lbs) per year at its Cedar Bayou Chemical Complex in Baytown, Texas. Construction is targeted to commence in the first half of 2012, and the project is anticipated to start up during the first quarter of 2014.

The company has executed agreements with S & B Engineers and Constructors, Ltd., to engineer and build the plant utilizing Chevron Phillips Chemical's proprietary, 2nd generation, on-purpose 1-hexene technology, which produces comonomer grade 1-hexene from ethylene with exceptional product purity.

The new 1-hexene unit at the Cedar Bayou facility will enjoy significant advantages in infrastructure, feedstock availability, and operational expertise. 1-hexene is a critical component used in the manufacture of polyethylene, a plastic resin commonly converted into film, pipe, detergent bottles, and food and beverage containers.

In 2013 SOCAR's chemical section to produce high-pressure polypropylene and polyethylene

(abc) -- Baku, Fineko/abc.az. Chemical section of State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), Azerikimya industrial association keeps on upgrade of industrial capacities. At the forum in Baku on Oil Gas Processing and Petrochemical Complex (SOCAR OGPC Forum) coming to the end, head of Azerikimya Mukhtar Babayev stated that by 2014 the Association is planning to put into operation installations on high-pressure polypropylene and polyethylene production.

" According to the plan, by 2020 Azerikimya will produce up to 165.000 tons ethylene, 200.000 tons propylene, 160.000 tons polyethylene and 160.000 tons high pressure polyethylene a year ",- M. Babayev said.

Azerikimya was incorporated in SOCAR by decree of Azerbaijani President from 2 April 2010.

Total reports valve failure and leak at Port Arthur refinery

(reuters) -- Total Petrochemicals reported a check valve failure that led to a spill at its 232,000-barrels-per-day Port Arthur refinery in Texas, according to a filing with state pollution regulators.

The filing with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality identified three tanks as the sources of the spill.

However, the filing did not specify the product released.

RIL plans to forge strategic partnership in petrochem and oil sectors in Tatarstan

(plastemart) -- Reliance Industries Ltd. plans to forge strategic partnership in petrochem and oil sectors with the Russian region of Tatarstan.

RIL and Tatarstan have agreed to set up a joint working group of specialists to develop strategic partnership in petrochemical and oil refining sectors, specially in crude oil refining.

The agreement was reached during the visit of a high-profile delegation led by Tatarstan's President Rustam Minnikhanov to Jamnagar in Gujarat on March 22.

The visit was aimed at getting on-the-spot information about the manufacturing processes and studying the advanced oil refining technologies launched by the RIL.

Petronas refinery project progresses in Malaysia

(refiningandpetrochemicals) -- Malaysia's state-owned oil and gas company Petronas has announced that its proposed Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) project is progressing as scheduled.

RAPID's proposed refinery will have a capacity of 300,000 barrels per standard day and will supply feedstock for RAPID's petrochemical complex.

Supply also includes gasoline and diesel that will meet European specifications.The project aims to capitalise on the growing need for specialty chemicals and to meet the demand for petroleum and commodity petrochemical products in the Asia Pacific region by 2016.

A detailed feasibility study on the proposed project was undertaken, and was completed in October 2011. Recently, Petronas has entered into a heads of agreement with BASF to jointly own, develop, construct and operate production facilities for specialty chemicals and plants for precursor materials within the RAPID complex.

A final investment decision for the project is scheduled in the middle of 2013.
